When my kids were younger this happened every night at dinner….”three more bites and then you can get down.” They wouldn’t eat. They were so picky and I had to beg them to get them to eat. It was exhausting and I didn’t know how we would ever get through a meal. I never understood why they wouldn’t listen to me and why there always had to be some sort of negotiation. After all, I am their mom and they should listen to me!
There is a popular worship song that I love that is called “Bigger Than I Thought”. It talks about how big and mighty God is, so much bigger than we can even imagine. It says, “so I’ll stop all negotiations with the God of all creation.” Every time I hear that line it stops me in my tracks. So often do we make negotiations with God. We want things to turn out the way that works out best for us instead of putting our trust in Him to guide us.
One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 3:5-6 and it says “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways obey Him and he will make your paths smooth and straight.” (NIRV) This verse doesn’t tell us to trust in the Lord, negotiate and try to make things easier for ourselves and he will direct our paths. It tells us that we should trust in God with ALL of our heart and not try to control it ourselves.
I never could understand why my kids would have the nerve to try to make deals with me at dinnertime. It’s not any different than me trying to make deals with God. He is in control and will guide our paths….even when we aren’t sure or want things to turn out another way. We have to fully put our trust in Him. Oh, and in case you are wondering, my kids are now 11, 14 & 17 and they officially eat me out of house and home!
