Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Belief . . .the conscious decision to trust in someone or something. We hold a lot of different beliefs in our world. Most of them are commonplace and often come closer to being personal opinions than they do deep seated beliefs. We believe that the sun will come up tomorrow no matter how today went. We believe that our team is the BEST team, even though they don’t always win. We believe that we can leave the house late and still make it to our destination on time (if only THOSE people will get out of the way). We believe that no matter how long the chicken wars last, Chick-fil-a sandwiches will always win. As I said, a lot of things we believe in are based on our preferences or opinions, which is fine. But when it comes to eternal things, what or WHO we believe in really matters.
Jesus challenged a lot of people in regard to what they truly believed. He told Nicodemus that a person had to be “born again”, and that whoever believed in him (Jesus) would never perish. (John 3:16) He told the father who asked that his son be healed that “everything is possible for one who believes.” (Mark 9:23) And to his disciples, Jesus said, “you believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1)
When Jesus stood before Martha after the death of her brother Lazarus, Jesus asked one of the most important questions in life. “Do you believe?” Martha, do you believe what I’ve shown you these past few years? Do you believe what you’ve read in the scriptures regarding the coming Messiah? Do you believe that I am who I have told you I am? Do you believe?
He was not asking her opinion. He was not making polite conversation. He was not trying to get her to dig deeply into the mysteries of life. He was asking her point blank . . .in the face of death . . .DO YOU BELIEVE IN ME?
The questions of life and death, the questions of meaning and existence, the questions of value and worth, were all answered on Easter Sunday. Jesus said, ““I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.”
Do you believe this? Your answer has eternal implications.
