day 29

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5 If you could ask God for anything and know that He would give it to you, what would you ask for?  We all know that God does not work that way right.  He is a loving Father, not a vending machine.  There is something that God wants to give each of us, and it is wisdom.  Making the right choice is a big part of everyday life.  God gives us the Holy Spirit,...

James 5:13-16 (New International Version)   13Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed....

day 27

Pray Continually 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Many times we save prayer as a last resort.  We only pray when we are in trouble or before a meal or at bedtime.  We put prayer in a box.  God's desire is that we would pray as we go about our day, as we do life, when things are good, when things are bad.  When we pray we don't have to use big words or talk along time, God is not impressed with our words.  He is concerned about our heart.  Talk to God today he is ready to listen.

day 26

But I cry to you for help, O Lord; in the morning my prayer comes before you.  Psalms 88:13 The way you start you day is very important.  Some people say I must have my coffee, or I must read the paper.  Other people hit the ground running because they are so busy.  Sometimes we feel like we are too  busy to pray.  If you are like me you are too busy not to pray.  Stop and thank God for his goodness in your life.  It is a great way to start your day.

day 25

Philippians 2:13-15 (New International Version) 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.  14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe It is 8 o'clock in the morning, and if you are like me you have already complained and argued today.  We must remember it is God who works in us and He does...

day 24

Romans 8:39 (New International Version) 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord This is one of the greatest promises in the Bible.  Nothing in all creation will be able to sperate us from the love of God.  Not our past failures, our current circumstances, or our future struggles can separate us from the love of God.

day 23

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace , along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.  2 timothy 2:22 God created us to live in community.  We need other people.  No one can live as the Lone Ranger.  There are things that we desire that we need to flee from, and pursue the life God has for us, along with other people that are pursue Christ with a pure heart.  Have a great day pursuing God.

Day 22

Therefore let us stop passing judgement on one another.  Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling blocks or obstacle in your brother's way.  Romans 14:13 It is easy to judge people.  Sometimes we judge people to make ourselves feel better about ourselves.  There is a part of us that loves to see other people fail.  We don't know enough about someone to judge them because we have not walked in their shoes.  We need to make the path easier for others and remove things that can...

Day 21

1 Corinthians 10:13 (New International Version) 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it Do you ever feel like you are the only one who has ever face the problems that you have faced?  Sometimes we think no one understands our situation, and that there is no hope in our circumstances.  You have not...

20

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household.  Ephesians 2:19 Paul wanted to Christians to remember what life was like without Christ.  We used to be foreigners and aliens but now we are adopted into God's house.  THis is not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done on the cross. We are also fellow citizens with God's people, our brothers and sisters in Christ.  We are no longer slaves...

verse 19

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Romans 13:1 We are have authorities in our life.  Some we like others we don't.  A few years after Paul wrote this letter, Nero who was in charge of Rome and began to kill Christians.  Paul tells us to respect earthly authority because it shows a respect for God's ultimate authority in your life.  We don't have...

day 18

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be Holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord Hebrews 12:12 Holiness is hard, but without it, you will not see the Lord.  Living in peace is also a challenge, but no one said following Christ was easy.  What do you need to start doing to pursue Holiness is your life?

day 17

Romans 10:14 (New International Version)  14How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? We all know people that need to hear the truth of who Jesus really is, and what He is doing in our lives.  In this verse in Romans Paul ask a simple question, "how can they hear without someone telling them? " As you go through the motions of your day today, and see...

day 16

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity Colossians 4:5 We have hundreds of opportunities everyday.  Opportunities to build up or tear down, to encourage or discourage, to compliment or complain, serve or wait to be served, appreciate the good or look for the bad, do our best or just get done, share what God is doing in our lives or remain silent.  Take Paul's challenge today and make the most of every opportunity.

day 15

2 Corinthians 5:20 (New International Version) 20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. You are an ambassador, or a representative of Christ.  Jesus could have chosen to use angels, or nature, or anything in all of creation to be his ambassador, but he chose you.  It gives us hope and a purpose, you have value, and a job to do today.  Be who you are!!  Represent Christ today

day 14

Philippians 2:14-15 (New International Version)  14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe. What if today you took the time you normally spend complaining and arguing, and invested that time in encouraging people.  I think you would find that people would want to be around you more, and that you would get more done.  If you did...

day 13

Psalm 101:6 (New International Version)  6 My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me;he whose walk is blameless    will minister to me This verse tells us something that our eyes should focus on, the faithful in the land.   It goes on to say that he whose walk is blameless will minister to me.  Your walk, the way you live your life always ministers to people for better or worse.  Seek to point people to Christ by the way you live today.

Day 12

Psalm 101:2-3 (New International Version)  2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life—   when will you come to me?   I will walk in my house        with blameless heart.  3 I will set before my eyes  no vile thing. I will set nothing before my eyes that is unclean, that is a challenge.  No movies, images, pictures, etc will come in front of my eyes that are unclean.  What we see with our eyes has an impact on our hearts and minds.  The things that you look at become the things that you...

day 11

Our Fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.  Hebrews 12:10 If your parents love you, they discipline you.  If parents gave their children everything they wanted, when they wanted it, they would have spoiled children.  God does not want spoiled children. He wants fully devoted Christ Followers.  God wants you to share in His holiness, and share in the life that He has planned for you.  God is not...

Day 10

1 Corinthians 3:16 (New International Version)  16Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? Everyone needs a place to call home.  In the Old Testament, people believed that God's Spirit lived in the temple.  Now God's Spirit does not stay in a building, God's Spirit lives in you.  What an awesome responsibility to live out, and what a tremendous promise to claim.  As you go through your day today, you can know that you are not what other...

Day 9

Matthew 6:24 (New International Version)  24"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money Jesus is telling us that our hearts can only be loyal to one love.  Most of us have just enough of the world in our hearts that we are not happy with Jesus alone, and we have just enough Jesus in our hearts that we are not happy with the world alone, our hearts are divided....

Day 8

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. Colossians 3:23 Everything that you do today is an act of love and respect for God.  This is one of my favorite verses.  It is very challenging but I think it will change the way you go about the routine tasks of your day.  Whatever it is you are doing today, working, school, being a mom or dad, work at it as if you were working for the Lord . . because you are.  Your life is a gift from God, honor...

Day 7

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  Colossians 3:2  Paul goes on to say that we should "put on the new self, which is being RENEWED in knowledge in the image of its Creator" in verse 10.  Today focus on setting your mind on things above.  Thank God for the chance to put on your "new self".  Look for ways you can be renewed in the image of Jesus.  Have a great day!!

Day 6

1 Peter 2:11-12 (New International Version)  11Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. The Bible makes it clear that this world is not our home, but it is where we are living right now.  We face a challenge as followers of Christ to live and function...

Day 5

How can a young man keep his way pure?  By living according to your Word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  Psalm 119: 9-11 What great advice for us on how to keep our lives pure, in a culture so full of impure thoughts and images.  We should strive to live according to God's Word, which means we must know God's Word, and we should hide His word in our hearts, so when we really...

Day 4

Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.  1 Timothy 4:12 When we took my daughter to a theme park, there were certain rides that she was not tall enough to ride.  I told her that when she was older we could come back and she could ride them.  She told me, " I can't wait until I am old enough to do anything."  When it comes to our faith and following Christ, you are old enough to do...

Day 3

Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.  Ephesians 4:24 It is a challenge every day to choose to put on the new self.  We are always tempted to put on the old self which is easier and safer, but we must strive to put on the new self that Christ has taken hold of for us.  We must believe that the new self that Christ has for us is the best possible way to life our lives every day.I pray today that you will live and walk in the new life that you have...

Day 2

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. (2) Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Ephesians 4:1-2 It is a challenge to live a life that is worthy of the calling we have received to follow Christ.  It is hard to be humble and patient with people that are different than we are.  As you read Ephesians 4:1-6 you will notice that Paul points out that we are part of one body, and we are...

Day 1

Today is the start of a journey for you in God's word.  I pray that this helps you hide God's word in your heart.  Feel free to comment on this to encourage others in their faith.  You guys are awesome!! Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.  Matthew 5:8 The Bible talks a lot about our hearts.  It seems that it is very important, not only physically but also spiritually.  We are told to guard our hearts, and also it is mentioned that out of the overflow of our hearts we...

MOTIONS

This week we will begin a six week teaching series through the book of Galatians called "the motions."  Many of us spend our lives going through the motions , and never really finding the purpose that God has for us on this earth.  I know that I often feel like my faith is reduced to a set of rules or a checklist and God never intended for it to be either of those.  We have put together a devotional guide for you to use during this study because God's word has the power to change people.  Come...

We are about to leave for Ignite 09, the summer beach experience of the burn student ministry.  Our theme this year is COLLISION.  When our world and our faith come together, there is always a COLLISION.  We are praying that God would do great things in the lives of students this week.  Please be in prayer for our times of worship. We are committed to reaching this generation for Christ

Prime Time

Only the best tv shows are shown in prime time.  The network executives know that  is the time of the day that most people can watch tv. (except  for you people with tivo).  I remember watching Deion Sanders play for the Cowboys.  He as always at his best when it mattered most.  He earned the nickname "prime time".  So what is the prime time of your life?  What is the time when you can most be used by God to influence people?  This summer we are studying the book of James. It is a great...

Jim Cooper Update

Many of you want to know about Jim Cooper.  For those of you that don't know Jim, he is an amazing guy, and one of my heros.  Jim spent a few years searching for exactly what God would have him to do, and he found it.  Jim serves God and children in an orphanage in Kenya Africa.  He works long days in bad conditions and loves every minute of it.  Kids in orphanages generally don't have much to look forward to, but thanks to people like Jim, these kids are loved on every day.  Our students had...

Choosing Not To Vomit

Many times in  the Book of proverbs, it talks about things that fools do.  One of the most interesting is proverbs 26:11, "as a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly".  This is not  a great visual picture, but it is a great life lesson.  Many times choices we make have consequences that we don't like.  Sometimes those consequences make us sick.  We promise ourselves we will never make that choice again, but after we forget how much it hurt, we are faced with the...
